Safety Protocols Update for Penn’s University Commencement Ceremony on May 20, 2024

May 8, 2024

Dear Parents, Families, and Friends,

We look forward to celebrating our graduates with you at the University-wide ceremony on Monday, May 20, 2024.  As a reminder, the ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m. on historic Franklin Field and end at approximately 12:15 p.m.

For the safety of all in attendance, the following protocols will be in place for Commencement.

  • This year, due to added safety requirements, all graduates and guests must clear airport-style security screening for admittance to Franklin Field, which will slow entry into the stadium. Please plan your arrival accordingly.
  • There will be no bags permitted, and only small wallets and clutch-style purses will be allowed in Franklin Field. A good rule of thumb: if an item does not fit in your pocket, please do not bring it with you.
  • Guests may not bring artificial noisemakers (including airhorns or bullhorns), signs, posters, flags, or golf umbrellas (small collapsible umbrellas only). Folding chairs and metal seatbacks are not permitted; flat stadium bench cushions are acceptable. A list of prohibited items can be found here on the Commencement website.
  • Gates to Franklin Field will open at 8:00 a.m. A high level of security will be maintained at all Franklin Field gates and on the field inside the stadium.
  • All graduates will be required to show their Penn ID to gain access to the field.
  • Guests who arrive with large items, such as large camera lenses, camera bags, golf umbrellas, diaper bags, and strollers, will be asked to step aside and their items will be scanned.
  • Outside food and beverages are not allowed in the stadium except for medical reasons. Refreshments can be purchased at concession stands inside the stadium.
  • The circumstances on Penn’s campus are evolving, and as such, the security procedures for the ceremony may change as conditions warrant. We will communicate updates via email and post them to the Commencement website’s home page.

As always, the safety of our students, staff, and guests is Penn’s top priority. We hope to see you at Commencement!
