University of Pennsylvania 264th Commencement

A Message to the Class of 2020
Regarding Commencement

Amy Gutmann, President
Wendell Pritchett, Provost
Craig Carnaroli, Executive Vice President

Last year, as the pandemic was unfolding around the world, we were forced to postpone plans for our traditional in-person Commencement for the Class of 2020 and we turned instead to a virtual ceremony. While the virtual ceremony was an important substitute, we also know how disappointing it was that graduates and family members were not able to gather together at Franklin Field to celebrate as we normally would. At the time when we were compelled to go virtual we also had reason to hope we would be able to invite the class back to campus this spring to celebrate their graduation in person.

Current campus health guidelines and travel restrictions, along with local health regulations, unfortunately necessitate a further postponement of the in-person event. Although we announced earlier today that we will be holding a limited in-person ceremony for some of this year’s graduating seniors, we are required by health guidelines to invite only those seniors who have been living on campus or in the immediate area and who have been part of our asymptomatic testing protocol this semester. Family and friends will not be able to participate in person and we will livestream the event.

With members of the Class of 2020 now literally spread across the country and around the globe, reconvening on campus this year is simply not possible.  We remain committed to finding the best in-person opportunity to appropriately recognize and celebrate our 2020 graduates.

We are grateful for your continued patience, look forward to welcoming you back to our beautiful campus, and send our warmest wishes for your health and well-being.
